Character name: Minako Arisato
Fandom: Persona 3 Portable
Timeline: January 2
Age: 17 (High School Junior)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Minako is what is known in the Shin Megami Tensei universe as a "wild card" Persona-user - that is, someone with the ability to hold multiple Persona at any given time. This was due to her hosting a fragment of Nyx inside her for ten years. Throughout SEES's travels through the maze-like tower known as Tartarus, Minako was able to awaken and invite additional Persona into her heart, therefore gaining the ability to summon them at her command.
A Persona typically manifests in dire situations, making casual summoning no simple matter. To evoke a Persona on command, the Kirijo Group developed "Evokers," intended to traumatize the Persona user to the point of awakening their Persona to come out and protect the user. Minako will have her Evoker on-hand upon her arrival, but while the gun does trigger a shot, it does not perform any damage and does not contain bullets, therefore it cannot be used as a weapon.
In addition to her Persona, which requires a great deal of energy and focus to summon and command, Minako has mastered the naginata. This serves as her primary physical attack, capable of unleashing long-range strike attacks.
How would they use their abilities?:
Minako's well into the habit of "saving the world" these days, and due to the draining ability Persona use has, she only uses it when an adversary proves to be too much, or when healing is needed. Typically she's more likely to use her naginata when fending off foes, as it doesn't spend spiritual energy and leave her tired the next day.
When dealing with fellow civilians, though, Minako has rarely used a Persona or her naginata on a person - unless they attack first. She's much more likely to attempt to reason with people or appeal to their emotions than to actually engage someone in combat. Persona and her naginata are almost entirely restricted to use against Shadows, the dark, wild side of people's inner selves gone awry.
Appearance:
Minako is a bright-eyed, often-smiling Japanese teenager with chestnut/auburn hair and ruby-hazel eyes. She has a sharp expression and appears to always be at attention. Her hair is usually pulled back into a high pony-tail, one side of her bangs swept sideways across her forehead and the other side clipped back with white bobby-pins in an "XII" pattern.
Although she is athletic, she is prone to wearing skirts, baby t-shirts, and stylish shoes. She enjoys being fashionable and wears a modest touch of make-up, but doesn't appear to wear a great deal of jewelry. Of course, this is when she's not in school, during which she wears the official black, white, and red Gekkoukan High uniform, as pictured here.
One noteable thing about her appearance is that she is rarely seen without her red mp3 player and clip-on earphones. These are either on her ears or dangled around her neck.
Background/Personality:
Minako Arisato is a lot of things to a lot of people, which can be both a boon and a burden to this orphan of ten years after a brutal and tragic car accident which killed both of her parents. In Japanese society, being an orphan often carries a stigma, as your heritage plays a key in your identity starting from birth and throughout your life. Perhaps this is why Minako was a blank slate, blessed with the power of the Wild Card - without family to fall back on, Minako was the perfect host for the embodiment of Death, who she carries within her for the next ten years. It is unknown how she spent the ten years of her life prior to her return to Iwatodai, and none of her friends seem to pry.
Having spent so much of her life ultimately alone, Minako developed a strong sense of independence and self-reliance. She is very introspective, looking to herself to maintain a cheerful disposition to see her through life without any real emotional ties to others around her. She moved around a great deal, transferring place to place until finally returning to her hometown of Iwatodai to begin her junior year at Gekkoukan High School.
She makes little fuss when she finds her arrangements there aren't exactly lined up. She's used to not really 'belonging' somewhere and seems to welcome the change. She approaches change with enthusiasm, her new acquiantances quickly taking notice of her bright and up-beat attitude to things that others often consider annoying.
As fate would seem to have it, Minako is thrust into the thick of a battle for humanity--and everything else, for that matter. On the night of April 20, Minako was abruptly awoken by her dormmate Yukari Takeba, as the dorm was under attack by a powerful Shadow, a being borne of humans' negative emotions. This awakens her Persona, Orpheus - but is immediately, mysteriously interrupted by Thanatos, another powerful Persona associated with the Death arcana. During the fighting, she also seemed to find her own. Minako is quickly appointed the leader of SEES, the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad headed up by Shuji Ikutsuki, the chairman of the board at Gekkoukan High School. Persona, he explains, are manifestations of a person's inner self brought forth as "masks" used to face hardships. She agreed to join the "club" without hesitation, always eager to try new things, charge ahead and take risks, and ultimately, to belong.
Minako is quick to fall into the role of leader, and takes her duties very seriously. She reaches out to each member of the team, pulling them back into the fold when they started to stray from the group, helping each teen with their issues and insecurities when they started to pose problems to the balance of the group. Minako becomes an unstoppable force in the lives of her new friends - almost literally. She's strong-willed, to the point of being pushy at times. However, she's a good listener and knows when to keep her opinions to herself, taking great care to read the social cues of those around her and only calling them to attention when they would be of benefit to the person's growth.
She's a multi-faceted individual who's unashamed by who she is, and doesn't think twice in her interactions, often acting on instinct. She's something of a tomboy, but frequently indulges her more girly side, especially when in Yukari's company. She also has a surprising appetite, something that several of her male friends comment on throughout the growth of her relationship with them.
Because of her attentive attitude towards her friends, she often neglects herself. She's physically resilient, able to physically keep up with her athletic senpai, spend hours leading SEES around Tartarus without being exhausted, and keeping up with her volleyball team's captain when her classmates give up around her. She isn't immune to getting sick, however, and there are several instances in which she does - one particuarly telling time was when she ended up caught in a typhoon, bringing on such a fever that she went comatose for several days. As such, she is often a subject of both frustration and admiration by her peers...though probably more of the former.
In spite of her cheery disposition, Minako's life is littered with strife and loss. Things began to spiral downward in October, with the death of upperclassman and SEES teammate Shinjiro Aragaki. A team of Persona users under the name STREGA were a constant thorn in their side with numerous failed attempts to thwart their slaying of powerful Full Moon shadows, and during one such attempt Shinjiro Aragaki fell victim to Takaya's attempt on young SEES member Ken Amada's life. It's at this time that the game notes Minako crying in public for the first time, something that could have been done several times before. Minako gains a strong attachment to her SEES teammates, and is devastated when harm befalls them as much as any other. Even so, she is resilient, and continues on with the mission (and life in general) in spite of the tragedy which befalls them. The same can be said in November with Ikutsuki's betrayal and murder of Mitsuru's father.
Through it all, Minako attempts a strong front, serving as a pillar of stability for all her friends to cling to through the chaos. SEES draws closer as a team, and, even with the elimination of all twelve Full Moon shadows, the fight is not yet over...not yet.
While the shadow of Death falls over Iwatodai and the teens of SEES, it isn't until a charming transfer student by the name of Ryoji Mochizuki arrives that Death is knocking on their door. (Though really he's more the type to just walk in...) Minako and Ryoji are instant friends, and why wouldn't they be, when he is essentially a byproduct of residing within her? He was the personification of death sealed away in Minako ten years ago by the Anti-Shadow Supression Weapon known as Aigis, who now serves as a SEES member alongside the others. It wasn't until the defeat of the twelve Full Moon shadows, which were the only things coming between Ryoji and the human world, were defeated that he was able to take on flesh form and co-mingle with humanity. Perhaps it was the fact that he'd been residing in Minako's soul for ten years (which would explain Thanatos when she'd awakened her potential), or maybe Minako was capable of readily investing herself emotionally by this point, but the relationship the two developed with each other was nothing short of a whirlwind of emotion and attachment, which made the horrible truth of Ryoji's existence a near breaking point for the girl.
Ever loyal to each and every friend, always optimistic, when faced with the difficult decision whether or not to kill Ryoji and forget impending doom that his presence had summoned to earth, or to spare his life and face Nyx, the god of Death, head-on, Minako clung to the hope that they could find a way to save humanity and bring the end of the world to a full stop, and refused to slay Ryoji for a convenient, oblivious end. At this empasse, Ryoji bids his farewell to the heroine to see her another day...and they face the New Year with a month left of preparation and coming to terms with what awaits them.
